The island of Lanai is a relatively new addition to the tourism industry, yet has quickly taken hold as a prime luxury destination. Formerly known as the Pineapple Island because of its acres of pineapple plantations, the island is now more aptly referred to as the Secluded Island. For years the island was relatively unknown to those visiting the Hawaiian Islands, as its main economy was agriculture.
Most Hawaiians considered Lanai a waste of time for tourists as it had little to offer in terms of amenities and paled in comparison to the more equipped islands of Maui and Oahu. However, this lack of attention seems to have benefited the island today as it remains sparsely inhabited and enjoys miles of empty land. Today, you can take long walks along empty beachfront and tour the highlands in a rented jeep without seeing a soul.
